How did we get here?
I don’t mean our physical location, that part is easy… We’d been living and travelling overseas, a baby was on the way, and it was time to go ‘home’ and grow up. Fear was setting in, “We can’t have a baby on the other side of the world!” “I can’t have a baby in THIS hospital, this is not what Australian’s are used too!” 8 weeks later and 7 months pregnant, we boarded the plane heading home to Adelaide in Australia. We found jobs, built a house, bought another house, had another baby, started a business, and BOOM! 11 years later… How did we get here?
Like all Australian families, we’ve packed a lot into our 15 years of marriage. Lots of fantastic experiences, lots of hard work, lots of rewards, lots of stuff (yes we have a house full of it!) lots of precious moments, lots of bills and debt, lots of concerns, lots of gratitude and lots of LOVE. But this year all of that just seemed to add up to lots of stress. Our beautiful daughter turned 11 in May, and it began to dawn on me, that time seemed to be speeding up. And, that the life that we had chosen, the one we are working so hard to maintain, was costing us the most precious asset we had, TIME. I was working 6 days a week, Simon leaves early and arrives home late, and then continues to be interrupted by work on the weekends. Our kids are growing up and we’re missing it.
Apparently, I wasn’t the only one feeling the cracks. Simon kept throwing in ‘jokingly’ into conversation “Let’s just run away, let’s go and live in Scotland”. Maybe I’m a little slow on the uptake, but I don’t think he was joking…
